Interesting facts about citrus fruits
In today’s article we would like to give you some interesting information about healthy citrus fruits!
Sour yet alkaline – the colourful citrus fruits
The colorful citrus fruits are among the most popular fruits in every season! The taste is refreshing and their aroma is reminiscent of sunshine and a holiday feeling. They are also considered a good source of vitamin C and also contain the important B vitamins B1, B2 and B3 as well as essential oils and polyphenols (secondary plant substances that only occur in plants). Depending on the variety, 100 g of fruit pulp contains 30-50 g of vitamin C. The energy content is on average around 47 kcal per 100 g of citrus fruit.
But why are they alkaline even though they sometimes taste so sour?
Many fruits contain organic acids that are metabolized in the respiratory chain. The alkaline minerals, such as potassium and magnesium, enter the blood. An acidic diet with too much meat, milk and grain products can promote hyperacidity. This permanent hyperacidity can be harmful to health in the long term.
Citrus fruits contain a high level of vitamin C, which is needed to be able to utilize the iron found in food. Vitamin C gives us a kick of freshness and is a good source of nutrients for connective tissue, teeth and bones. Secondary plant substances with a high antioxidant effect are abundant in these delicious fruits. They are also called flavonoids, and they help the body to stay healthy. Citrus fruits can supposedly even compensate for the health disadvantages of being overweight and protect against heart attacks, diabetes and liver disease.
